Makes me happy when we have this: "Tonight we're dhaling, Darling"

You've got to love this stuff. It costs pennies; you can make more than you need and it will keep; and it is delicious!

Directions

Heat some oil in a saucepan and fry the cumin seeds for 30 seconds

Add the onion and fry for another 5 minutes

Add the garlic and ginger and fry for 2 more minutes

Add the lentils and turmeric and stir for a few seconds then add the water and stir

Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer with the lid on for 10 minutes

Add the salt and garam masala and cook until the lentils break down to something like porridge

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tblsp fresh ginger, finely chopped
  • 8oz (250g) lentils
  • 1 1/2 (750ml) pints hot water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1tsp garam masala
